Best winter destinations Filipinos need to see at least once

Ready to swap the tropical heat for snow-covered towns and cozy winter nights? Here are the best places to make that happen.

For many Filipino travelers, winter is one of the most enchanting, partly because of the country’s climate. As they are used to sunshine year-round, winter travel offers a stark contrast that feels almost cinematic—cities that glow with festive lights and landscapes transformed by snow.

Experiencing winter abroad allows travelers from tropical countries to try new activities practically impossible at home, such as skiing, snowboarding, ice fishing, or even just walking through snow-covered streets with a hot drink in hand. It’s also a chance to enjoy cultural moments like Christmas markets, winter festivals, and local traditions tied to the season.

As the leaves fall and autumn ends for countries in the temperate zones of the world, Filipino travelers will once again be looking for their dream winter destinations. Below are places that combine accessibility, iconic winter scenery, and a wide range of seasonal activities.

Japan

Japan is one of Asia’s top winter destinations, known for its powdery snow, efficient transport, and diverse winter attractions. It’s an ideal first winter country for Filipinos.

In Hokkaido, several resorts are world-famous for skiing and snowboarding, welcoming both beginners and experienced travelers. The Sapporo Snow Festival is another highlight, featuring massive snow and ice sculptures that turn the city into a winter art wonderland. Elsewhere, winter illuminations in major cities and snow-covered temples add to Japan’s seasonal charm.

Travelers should prepare for cold temperatures, especially in northern regions, and plan for possible snow delays. Rail passes are highly recommended for flexibility and savings. Ski accommodations sell out quickly during winter as well, so booking early may be needed. While English use has grown, language barriers still exist, making translation apps useful.

South Korea

South Korea’s winter popularity among Filipinos is heavily influenced by K-dramas, which romanticize snowy streets and stylish winter clothing. Beyond pop culture, Korea, much like Japan, offers accessible ski resorts and vibrant winter festivals.

Ski destinations like Yongpyong and Vivaldi Park are popular choices, while Nami Island becomes especially picturesque when blanketed in snow. In Seoul, palaces and traditional neighborhoods take on a quieter beauty during winter. Unique events like the Hwacheon Ice Fishing Festival also offer hands-on seasonal experiences.

As for things needed in preparation, below-zero temperatures are common in the country, so travelers should take time to acclimatize. However, Korea does have local goodies that help combat the cold, such as heated floors (ondol), hot packs, and proper layering.

Travel insurance is also strongly advised, particularly for travelers eager to try winter sports. Similar to Japan, English is present in tourist areas, but the difference in language can still be a challenge in other places.

Finland

For a true winter wonderland, Finland’s Lapland region stands out. It offers some of the most iconic cold-season experiences in Europe.

Lapland is one of the best places in the world to see the iconic and breathtaking northern lights when it’s on season. Visitors can also enjoy reindeer sleigh rides, husky safaris, snowmobile adventures, and stays in glass igloos or ice hotels. Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi adds a whimsical touch, especially for.

Extreme cold and limited daylight are part of the experience, so proper winter gear is necessary not just to enjoy the trip but also to survive. An option many travelers can do is to rent full winter outfits locally. Due to its rarity, booking guided aurora tours increases the chances of successful sightings and ensures safety in harsh conditions.

Switzerland

Switzerland is another premier luxury winter destination, famous for its alpine scenery and efficient transport system. Ski resorts in the country offer stunning views so it can be enjoyable even for non-skiers.

One of the best ways to enjoy winter in Switzerland is aboard scenic trains, which showcase snow-covered mountains in comfort. During the holidays, markets in Zurich and Lucerne add warmth and festive charm despite being out in the cold.

However, much like other destinations mentioned in the article, travelers should allow time to acclimatize to higher elevations, especially when skiing. While Switzerland is expensive, luxury hotel loyalty programs and first-class rail passes can add value and elevate the experience.

Winter travel opens a whole new world for Filipino travelers, one filled with snow, seasonal festivals, and unforgettable firsts. Whether it’s skiing in Japan, living out K-drama moments in Korea, chasing the Northern Lights in Finland, or enjoying alpine luxury in Switzerland, winter destinations reward those willing to brave the cold.
